How to transfer an entire Photos Library to a new Apple ID
Switching to a new Apple ID can be tricky, especially when it comes to moving your entire Photos library. While Apple provides some tools, they aren't always intuitive. Here's the fastest way to transfer your Photos library without manual backups.
Avoiding the Manual Backup
Initially, I tried copying photos manually in batches, only to find out that Apple limits bulk transfers to about 1,000 photos at a time. After completing a manual backup, I discovered a hidden option that allows you to transfer your entire library in just a few simple steps. Here's how you can save time at my expense:
Steps to Transfer Your Photos Library
Step 1: Share the Library with the New Apple ID
On your current Apple ID, open the Photos app and create a Shared Library. Invite your new Apple ID to join the shared library.
Step 2: Accept the Invitation with the New Apple ID
Log in with your new Apple ID, open the invitation, and accept it. Allow the Photos app to sync the shared library.
Step 3: Leave the Shared Library on the New Apple ID
Once the sync is complete, leave the Shared Library using your new Apple ID. When prompted, select the option to copy all shared photos to your library.
This method uses Apple's Shared Library feature to copy your photos when you leave the shared library. It’s much faster and less error-prone than exporting or manually backing up photos.
